ZAWALONYJ, Josafat “Joe”

October 8, 1924 – December 21, 2018

We are saddened to announce the passing of Josafat “Joe” Zawalonyj in Cochrane AB, at the age of 94 years.

Joe was born on his family’s estate near Lviv, Ukraine where he gained his love of the land and it’s bounty. WWII took him from Agricultural College to the front lines. After the war he spent four years in Italy and then in Nottinghamshire, England where he met his future wife Mavis and their daughter Tia was born. In 1966 the family moved to Toronto , where as he had done in England, Joe worked on the construction of major highways. The family finally settled in Calgary in 1975.

Retirement gave Joe the time to pursue his passions. He loved his roses as much as the vegetables he grew and served to his family at weekly Sunday suppers he prepared. Joe sang in his church choir, was an avid Hockey and Soccer fan and loved to talk about politics! Joe and Mavis travelled extensively. But most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family.

He was known for his kindness, generosity, and peaceful nature. Joe’s outgoing nature and ready smile will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him. Joe is survived by his loving wife Mavis, his daughter Tia, grandchildren Matthew (Paige), Devin (Andrea), Cody, and great grandchildren Lily, Isabelle, Violet, and Emery.

Joe was a good and kind man and we are happy that we had the pleasure of knowing him. Through the years, he gave us many good gardening tips. When the day lilies that he gave us bloom, we will always remember him.

We are thinking of you, Mavis and family, at this sad time. You can all take comfort for the wonderful care you gave Joe.

    Love,
    Myrna and Ed Pruden

I am deeply saddened to hear of “Joe’s” passing. He was such a kind and happy man. For many years Joe would bring us girls flowers, a smile and an occasional hug with his regular visits……we so appreciated his thoughtfulness. He loved to talk about where he and Mavis would go on their next cruise adventures.
Thinking of you Mavis and family during this sad time…… Every year when my Iris blooms I think of Joe and am thankful he gave them to me many years ago. He will be remembered.
Hugs to you all: Hollie Erickson
