WERNER, Alvin

b. 10 January 1966 –  Steinbach, Manitoba

d. 30 September 2020 – Cochrane, Alberta

Alvin Werner, much loved husband, father, brother and friend, passed away suddenly in the early evening of September 30th, 2020, in Cochrane Alberta at the age of 54.

Alvin’s life was built around his love of family, friendships, outdoor adventure, aviation, and travel. His passion for photography, WWII history and modelling is familiar to everyone who got to know him. He worked hard, played hard and lived each day to the fullest. He had a boundless curiosity and loved to learn, enjoying conversations and sharing new ideas with friends. Alvin was steadfast, loyal and generous; a straight-shooter with a mischievous sense of humour.

He is survived by his wife Lise, his daughters Sonja and Kaysa, his brothers Hans, Willie, Gerhard, and sisters Marie, Alvina, and Sieglinde.

A celebration of Alvin’s life will be live-streamed at 10:30 am  on Friday October 9, 2020, at the following:

My heartfelt sympathies to Lise, Sonja and Kaysa and the entire extended family. Truly tragic. Alvin was a friend that I got to know many years ago at CBI and then later spent nearly 4 months travelling with him in Nepal and Indonesia. What great memories of adventure, laughter and deep discussions. Although I had not seen Alvin for many years, I have never forgotten his friendship. May you all find peace in the coming days.

I am so sad to hear of the passing of Alvin. I remember him when we were small children, playing at Ash Park in Steinbach. He had blonde hair and was permanently tanned from playing outside. Always friendly. An adorable little boy. He would spend hours at the park playing with his model plane…trying to get the motor to actually work so he could fly his plane. Everybody liked him.

A full moon rises over a warm Fall evening, bearing witness to tragedy.
A hard knock pounds on a door, with devastating news.
The phone rings late at night, shattering our world miles away.
    Our brother… Alvin…hit…killed…instantly.
    Gone without saying good-bye.
On the hillside, his bike, pieces strewn about.
HIs glove, broken sunglasses, shoe insert, a child’s drawing.
We have lost our dear youngest brother, and it breaks my heart.
The baby I held, the boy I played with, the teenager I coached as he learned to shift gears.
The man I had discussions with over the miles, family, friends, adventures, work, dreams.
I miss his smile, the twinkle in his eyes, his voice, his laughter, his gentleness, his kinship.
    I weep, I grieve, I remember, I pray,
    and I forgive.
