SYLVESTRE, Gregoire “Greg” James

We are sad to announce the passing of our beloved son and brother, Gregoire “Greg” James Sylvestre on Monday, June 21, 2021 at the age of 57.
Greg was born in Edmonton on November 21, 1963 to Phil and Mona Sylvestre. His life was filled with many accomplishments including, Youth of the Year in 1988, and raising funds for the Cochrane Bethany Care Centre to name just a few. He was employed most recently with CNRL and before that Yellow Pages, RBC, Medi-Chair, H & R Transport, and in his younger years at the Town of Cochrane as a dispatcher for the Fire and Ambulance Department. Dear Mona, Lisa, Tony, and all of Greg’s family:
I’m living in Sydney, Australia currently, and my mom just texted me with the news of Greg’s death. It is a very sad Sunday morning for me here. Please accept my deepest condolences.
Working with Greg at the Cochrane Foodmaster was a seminal time in my life, perhaps the key experience of my youth. Greg took me under his wing, watched out for me, stood up for me against a town bully, and provided me with the coolest and greatest role model an 1980s Cochrane punk like me could ask for.
I will never forget going to visit Greg at Foothills hospital, shortly after his skiing accident. I had never before experienced such an upheaval of my emotions as I did that day. Greg called me over to the bed (the room, I recall, was full of visitors), held my hand in his, and asked how I was doing. None of it made sense. Except his kindness and compassion at a time he could be forgiven for not showing it.
I was grateful to spend some time with him again when I interviewed him for a project I was doing with CHAPS in 2005. A video was recorded of this interview, and is currently in the possession of CHAPS. Please let me know if you’d like a copy of it, and I can see about arranging that for you.
Much love to you all and, once again, my sincere condolences on the passing of such a great man.

My dear friend Mona ….May you remain in the future, as strong as you have been your entire life. I send you my hugs, and loving support and sincere sympathy. Merle
My deepest condolences to the family. Greg was on of my best friends growing up in Cochrane. I will forever remember his amazing wit and charm with that amazing smile he had all the time. I do not remember once when Greg was not smiling. He had a heart of gold and touched many peoples lives with his kindness and positivity. He will be deeply missed in this world. A one of a kind in this world! We need more humans like him in this world today. My heart goes out to the family. May he Rest In Peace, never will he be forgotten!
Mona and family. I’m so sorry to hear of Greg’s passing. Our prayers are with you
Mrs.Sylvestre, I am so saddened to hear about the loss of your son Greg. My heart breaks for you. A mother’s pain of losing a child would be almost unbearable, I watched my parents go through it when we lost my brother Roland at the young age of 21. And you have had to endure losing a child twice. My thoughts are with you at this most difficult time <3 Christine
To Mona and the entire Sylvestre family,
I was deeply saddened to hear of Greg’s passing. Even though I didn’t know him as well as some of the other Sylvestre family members, I will always remember Greg with a smile. He was always kind and witty….but aren’t you all? During his 57 years, I’m certain he made lasting memories for all of you to hold dear. My most sincere condolences and biggest hugs go out to the entire family.

Thinking of you, Mona, JP and Jenn, and all Greg’s siblings. I will remember Greg as a kind soul who was always ready to offer a warm smile or laugh (both of which he prompted often in others, too). He always made me feel welcome in a room and was ready to settle in for a chat or a companionable silence. I know he will be deeply missed by so many. May you all have opportunity to remember so many of the special times you had with him.
