SLOAN, Doris Anna Emily

August 18, 1929 – April 15, 2020

The dash in the middle of those dates is being reflected on as a wonderful and fulfilled life.  Doris was born in Birch Hills SK, raised in Weldon and Prince Albert SK, trained to be a nurse at Saskatoon City Hospital, married Langtry Willson Sloan and raised 2 daughters.  She lived large, from her love of sports, family and fun, to her ability to encourage anyone who needed a cheerleader.  Doris had the knack of being able to connect with people.  Her compassion as a nurse carried on long after the paychecks.  She opened her life up to people, was very willing to volunteer, be involved, and radiate sunshine at every opportunity.  She spent 45+ years singing harmony with Sweet Adeline’s and this provided her with deep friendships and wonderful experiences. Doris cared.  She invested in people throughout her life and was richly rewarded.

She always had a “trapline” of folks who enjoyed her visits for a haircut, support, cut flowers from her garden, a taxi service, a friend.  She looked for the good in everything, and showered that positivity on the folks around her.

She gardened and sewed, raised kids, she laughed, ran a household, she neighboured, was charitable, she read, she sang, she nurtured, she worshiped, she camped, and she laughed some more.

Her friendship knew no bounds.  Lately with the community at Grande Avenue Village, she kept her social skills honed by participating in many of the “goings on” and as always, made many dear friends among the residents and the staff.

She loved, and was loved.  90 years of life well lived.

She leaves behind her daughters Kim Washington (Howard), Tracy Buckley (John), grandchildren Trevor & Sandra Buckley, Eric & Robyn Buckley, great grandchildren Finn, Isla, and Rebecca.   To quote Doris “aren’t we blessed to have them in our lives?”  Yes Mom, and we are doubly blessed to have had YOU in our lives.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Arrangements entrusted to Cochrane Country Funeral Home, Florence (Flo) Simpson, Funeral Director. Ph: 403-932-1039.

    Deepest sympathy to Kim and Tracy and their families and to all of you who knew and loved Doris. She was an amazing person. I had the privilege of singing with her in a quartet for 25 years. I have a mountain of memories of many fun performances where I’m sure we had as much fun as (hopefully) our audiences did. We travelled together to many, many cities – attending Sweet Adeline functions and, in our younger years, were known to be among the last people to shut down the AfterGlows. Doris taught by example and shared her wealth of experience and knowledge with all who knew her. She was a warm hostess, alway happy to invite you in to her tiny kitchen to share a cup of tea or coffee or a quick meal. Her smile and her laughter were infectious and warmed the hearts of all who knew her. We always teased her about her bottomless purse because if anyone needed ANYTHING, Doris would find it somewhere in the bottom of her handbag.
    My sons, Bruce, Keith and Steven, literally grew up with Doris and send their condolences. Rest in Peace, Doris. I will miss your smiles and laughter and I will especially miss your hugs. Love you.

    Dear Tracy, and Kim,
    Your Mom was an amazing woman and one I will miss very much. She welcomed me in the door of Chorus rehearsals 30 years ago , the first time I arrived and she continued to welcome me into her life every since then. We always would hug and then make a comment on how great that hug was for both of us. We had a special Christmas connection where we would give each other an Angel tree ornament. Now I have a wonderful collection to go on my tree every Christmas. I will always have her in my heart. I am sure that she is watching over you both and all your families. I am just glad that she was a part of my life for the last 30 years. She was an amazing lady and now is an amazing spirit. Love Mary Jane

    To Kim, Tracy, and families;
    I was surprised and sorry to read of the passing of Doris, my sincere condolences to you all. It’s been a very long time, but seems like yesterday, when I’d stop by every second Wednesday night to collect for the Herald. Your Dad’s greeting of “Hello, Easy Money” in his soft drawl, and your Mom’s hearty laugh and friendly smile, then we’d spend much time chatting about different topics, too numerous to count over those years. They were always kind to me, especially your Mom’s hospitality, and I’ve always appreciated that. May the love of family and friends support you in this time. Take care.
