PENNER, Wesley Roy

August 21, 1932 – July 10, 2021

Wesley Penner was born on the family farm at Linden, AB to Frank and Anna (Reimer) Penner.  He passed away suddenly at the Rockyview General Hospital, Calgary, AB on July 10, 2021, at the age of 88, with family members at his side.

Dad took up farming like his father, first at Swalwell, AB and then at Edberg, AB.  After selling the farm in 1973, he had a long career as a grain buyer for the Alberta Wheat Pool retiring in 1990.  Once retired, he moved to Cochrane, AB and spent nearly 30 years there making many new friends and enjoying life.

Growing up we had many camping trips as a family, and Dad continued this passion in his retirement for several years, creating new friends along the way.  We have many memories of laughing around a campfire in Kananaskis or Bragg Creek areas.  After his camping days were over, he spent many a day on his famous road trips around the province, either on his own or as a tour guide with one of his friends.  His favourite trip was the one in 1997 to California with his friend Harold.

His great joy in later life was meeting and marrying Cathy Laird, who sadly passed away much too early, which greatly shortened their time in life together.

Some of Dad’s latest memories at family gatherings was meeting and holding two of his great grandsons.

Dad was predeceased by his parents, our Mom (Glenda), his second wife Cathy, two sisters, and other close relatives.

Left to cherish memories are his children, Russ (Teresa), Monty (Patsy), Crystal (Duane), and Cameron (Isabel), all from Calgary; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; many relatives including his nephew/close friend Stan (Angela) Wiebe; and many other friends.  A lifetime of memories created and shared with his brother and sisters generated laughter and love throughout the years.  He will be greatly missed by all.

Cremation has taken place and there is no service planned, as were his wishes.  He will be laid to rest with Cathy in Cochrane Cemetery.

As a family, we would like to express our deepest appreciation to the staff at Silvera for Seniors – Aspen Community, for the loving care provided over the last year and a half.  As well to the staff on the ICU wing at the Rockyview General Hospital for all they did for Dad.

My sympathies to Wes’s family. As a marriage commissioner at the time, I was honored to perform Wes and Cathy’s wedding ceremony. After having performed hundreds of ceremonies I can still say it was my favorite ceremony. They were a beautiful couple and Wes especially has assured me “it was never too late for love”. Wes struck me as a great man and I remember him fondly. Keep the happy memories close to your heart through this sad time.

To all of Wes Penner’s family. I am so sorry for your loss. Wes was a wonderful man and a dear friend. Wes and my Dad, Harold Spicer, did a tremendous amount of travelling together. I always thanked Wes for giving my Dad such joy with his friendship over my Dads last seven years of life. I know they will share lots of jokes and laughs in heaven together.
    Rest In Peace Wes
