Bruno Streu

April 3, 1934 — July 5, 2020

April 3, 1934 – July 5, 2020

We will all remember Bruno’s smile, his generosity, and his loyalty to family and friends.  He took joy in working hard, playing hard, laughing hard, striving for excellence, and earning his place in life.  We learned so much from his example.  What mattered to Bruno were his family, friends, work, camping and fishing.  And the occasional glass of beer or wine to celebrate the blessings in his life.

Bruno was a very talented craftsman who took great pride in the residential and commercial structures he built during a lifelong career in the construction industry.  He began with a strong back, cribbing basements and framing houses, owned and operated North Hill Concrete, became a master of many trades building custom homes, and shared his expertise as a superintendent with construction firms in Calgary and Vancouver.  He built our first family home in Winnipeg, the cabin in Invermere, and retirement homes in Peachland and Mission.  He also performed countless renovation projects on his children’s homes.

In addition to his family and his work, Bruno loved the great outdoors.  Family vacations usually involved an RV of some sort for travels through much of western Canada.  A trip he looked forward to every year was salmon fishing off Vancouver Island with his brothers, friends and son.  Up before dawn to fish, then clean and can the salmon, then rest, then back out on the water for the evening catch.  And a little food and beer in between the work.

Bruno was born on April 3, 1934 to Gustav and Lydia Streu in Radycza, Poland. He emigrated from Germany to Canada in 1951.  He left us on July 5, 2020, at home in Cochrane, surrounded by his family, after a brief but valiant struggle with pancreatic cancer.  His end was peaceful after scripture readings and prayers at his bedside led by Pastor Jonathan Schultz.

Bruno’s memory is cherished by his loving wife of 64 years, Marlene, and children Margaret and Brian Byl, and Don and Lisa Streu.  So dear in his heart are his grandchildren Michela Byl (Quinn Palmer), Garrett Byl (Baylee), Lexi Streu (Mark Stiles), and Kiana Streu.  We will miss him always.  He is survived by his sister Ruth Allard, brothers Hart Streu (Heather) and Herman Streu (Bonnie), sister-in-law Mary Streu, brother-in-law Bruno Roloff, close friend Erich Hintz, and many nieces and nephews.  Bruno was predeceased by his parents, sister Frieda Roloff, and brother Gerry Streu.
