Stephen Lawrence Cooper was born on December 13th, 1960 in the town of Stettler, Alberta. The third born in a family of four children, he spent his childhood years attending six different schools before the last three years at Cochrane High School. It was there that he started friendships that lasted the rest of his life.
Steve finished university in Victoria after becoming the father of two children and marrying his beloved Susan. He was proud of the Honors degree in Economics, but his family was everything.
After university, Steve, Susan, Jennie, and Branden settled in High River Alberta, where they lived for almost 25 years. During those years, Steve worked for NOVA, then for two smaller survey companies. He was excellent at his job, finding himself a mentor to many.
Steve was an avid outdoors person - loved hiking, backpacking, kayaking and camping especially – and a superb downhill skier. He also loved traveling - all over Canada, the US, the Camino in Spain, and throughout SE Asia.
Steve was diagnosed with ALS in June 2022. He was accompanied throughout this journey by close family and friends. In addition, the support and kindness of the ALS Society, the ALS Clinic, Dr. Stephanie Mullin and the staff of Two Pharmacy in Cochrane was exceptional – our family extends heartfelt gratitude.
Steve is predeceased by his father, Bill (2018) and mother, Joanne (2019). He is survived by his wife Susan; daughter Jennifer (Ryan), and son Branden (Vince); grandchildren Casen and Emery; siblings David (Heidi), Michael, and Sharon (Kevin); sister-in-law Julie (Franck), brother-in-law Andrew; and nieces / nephews Aileen, Angelica, Niah (Dean) and Brodie.
