Robert ( Bob ) John Romney of Cremona, Alberta passed away at the age of 91. Bob is predeceased by his loving wife Genny and his infant brother James. Bob was son of Charles Romney and Mary Elizabeth Romney. Bob is survived by his eight children: Eleanor (Jim), John (Maureen), Howard (Cindy), Neil (Lorraine), Lois (Bob), Ley (Dennis), Donna (Murray), and Richard (Margaret); seventeen grandchildren: Christine, Kimberley, Rob (Rebecca), Matthew (Christina), Deanna (Paul), Douglas (Holly), Malcolm, Wayne (Julie), Cory, Nicole, Mike (Rachiel), Kris (Megan), Steve, Bradley (Leah), Nolan, Jenine, and Wilton; nine great-grandchildren, as well as other relatives and close friends.
Bob was born in Calgary’s Killarney district. As a young man he apprenticed as a mechanic under Tim Horne’s garage in Killarney prior to going off to Pearce, Alberta to train as a pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force in WWII. Much to Bob’s dismay, his color blindness excluded him from flying, so instead he used his skills as a mechanic to repair aircrafts in England during the war. On his return to Canada, he joined the Calgary Fire Department, following in his father’s footsteps. In Bob’s spare time he courted his best friend’s sister, Genevieve (Genny) Harris. They married May 30, 1947 in Canmore. Bob always wanted a large family and together he and Genny had four daughters and four sons. In order to support his family and passion Bob continued to rise up the ranks of the Calgary Fire Department and take on various other jobs including hauling gravel, driving and repairing school buses, farming, and training and racing horses in Alberta, B.C. and Montana.
Bob was an active volunteer, chairing various organizations including the Calgary Firefighters Credit Union, Pine Slopes, Cochrane Agricultural Society, and horse racing commission.
At the request of Bob, there will be no Formal Funeral Service. There will be an open house on Sunday, June 29th, 2014 at the Spray Lakes Arena, 800 Griffin Road East, Cochrane, between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to celebrate Bob’s life.
