It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Garry Wayne Rivers announces his passing on July 21st, 2013 at the age of 70 years. Surrounded by his loving family, Garry’s father Harry and nephew Jason escorted Garry to his heavenly home where he will enjoy walks with his beloved predeceased four legged pets. Garry was predeceased by his fiance, Linda, infant daughter Carley, father Harry and nephew Jason. He was born in Calgary on March 12th, 1943; the eldest son of Harry and Betty Rivers. Garry is lovingly remembered by his wife and best friend Nancy, daughter Aaryn (Lyle), sons Shane and Ryan and grandchildren, Sienna, Jake, Karlehn and Ryker. Garry is also survived by his mother, Betty Rivers, brothers Bill (Betty), Jim (Judy), Randy (Andrea), almost brother Keith; sisters Sherron (Gary) and Kelly (Randy), numerous nephews, neices, great nephews and neices, Auntie Eunice, his father-in-law Bob, sister-in-law Cheryl (Matthew) , brother-in-law David and other extended family. Garry spent his entire life growing up in Altadore and for the most part, never leaving the neighbourhood. Garry attended Western Canada High School and was a “star” athlete in basketball, baseball, football and track and field. To this day, Garry holds the record for several track and field events due to metric conversion. Garry retired as Captain from the Calgary Fire Dept. in 2000 after 33 years of service. Garry loved his pets and enjoyed taking his dog “Ollie” to tracking and agility classes in Canmore. Garry always had dog treats in every pocket for any dog that he happened to meet. Garry was a “gentle” giant of a man and was referred to as “Uncle Buck” by nephews and nieces.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Eden Brook Funeral Home, 17th Avenue S.W. and Lower Spring Bank Road, Calgary, Alberta on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 2:00 P.M.
