On November 27, 2023, Rick arrived at his final travel destination. As he crossed the Rainbow Bridge, he was enthusiastically greeted by his many beloved German Shepherds (and two rabbits) who had been patiently waiting for him.
Rick’s passion for his GSDs was almost as strong as his continual quest for vacation adventures. Although an accountant by profession, his real calling was as a travel agent; he planned the most amazing holidays. Whether it be the Caribbean, Europe, China, or India, he would plan every aspect with the same attention to detail as a financial audit.
Rick was born in Lloydminster, SK. He was determined to call himself an Albertan and said it was only a fluke that the hospital was on the Saskatchewan side of the city.
At an early age the family moved to New Brunswick where he grew up. After obtaining his Business Administration degree from UNB, he came west to Calgary.
He started in the financial services industry, meeting his wife, Wendy, when they both worked for RBC.
He was transferred to Ft McMurray with RBC, later moving to Edmonton to work in the accounting office for an Oil & Gas equipment supplier. That company was purchased by Turbo Resources and Rick was transferred to Calgary. He obtained his RIA (now CPA) designation and moved into the Treasury department of Turbo. This period of employment was probably the most challenging and satisfying of his career. Rick later had his own accounting practice, was an auditor with CRA and then employed by Canadian Hibernia Holding Corp.
Rick and Wendy were married in Nassau, Bahamas on March 3, 1982. In 1989 they moved from Calgary to the beautiful hamlet of Water Valley. They loved the peace and tranquility of their small acreage and began to breed and show German Shepherd dogs. They had one very special boy, Sultan, who achieved Top Male GSD in Canada. Shortly after this, they regained their sanity and departed the show world scene to settle at home with only two dogs at a time!
After retirement, in 2019, Rick and Wendy travelled to Lake Chapala, MX to spend 6 months over the winter. Finding accommodation that would accept the two dogs was about as much of a challenge as driving the 7 days to Mexico, including the border crossings at US and Mexico!
Rick leaves behind his wife of 41 years, Wendy (nee Mounce), and brothers David (Elena) and Dennis (Anne), as well as several nieces and nephews. He also leaves Callie to look after and comfort ‘Mom’
He was predeceased by his parents William ‘Douglas’ and Violet and brother, Malcolm ‘Terry’
Rick did not want a service or Celebration of Life and we will honour those wishes.
If desired, donations can be made to the Calgary Zoo, Cochrane SPCA or Alberta Institute for Wildlife Conservation.
On a personal level I would like to extend my sincere gratitude and appreciation for Dr Kellie Hurd, Dr David Campell, Nurse Tsering Chopell and the staff at Unit 46 of the Foothills Hospital. You are all angels!
