It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that we announce Larry McClennon passed away on Tuesday, July 7th in Calgary, AB. He was predeceased by his son Steven and his parents Lorne and Helen.
Larry is survived by his beloved wife Diane of 52 years; his two children Carmen (Joel) and Brian (Carolyn); his cherished grandchildren; Kate and Madeline; and his sisters; Maureen (Damon) Kondro and Jean (Gary) McClennon-Leong, as well as a circle of other relatives and friends.
Born in Wainwright, AB, Larry attended the University of Alberta where he received the school’s First Degree in Petroleum Engineering. Following graduation, he joined the oil and gas company Petrofina, working at the Wildcat Hills facility near Cochrane in 1964. Later while employed by Petro-Canada, he moved his family to Barbados to lead Barbados National Oil Company. He returned to Canada where he worked until his retirement in 2005, commemorating 40 years with Petro-Canada.
Larry grew up in Redwater, Alberta where he was an accomplished athlete and academic. He earned many awards and scholarships for both his athletic prowess and academic achievements. It was there that he met the love of his life, Diane, who he began to date at the age of 16.
Larry loved music and played many instruments – many by ear. In his late teens and early twenties he joined friends from Redwater to form the band – Thunder Birds. Throughout his life, he could always be counted on to have the latest ‘high-tech’ stereo equipment.
While living in Cochrane, Larry was very active in the community, he was president of the Lions Club and a volunteer at many club sponsored events, including the annual Labor Day Rodeo. He was also active in the church vestry and played a key role in relocating All Saints church to its current site.
Larry loved to ski and supported his son’s ski racing, including taking on the role of Mount Norquay ski club president. In 1988, Larry and family volunteered in various capacities at the Winter Olympics, and many other ski racing events. In later years, Larry loved to look after his bird feeders. He was smart, articulate and could always be counted on to deliver a great speech.
Larry was a very kind and charitable person, he was a willing participant in research projects at the Movement Disorder Clinic at the Foothills Hospital and was enthusiastically involved in the Cochrane Parkinson Support Group.
A Memorial Service will be held at All Saints Anglican church ( 404 – 4 Avenue North, Cochrane, AB ) on Monday, July 20th at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinson Alberta ( Research ) 102, 5636 Burbank Crescent S.E., Calgary, AB.
