July 25, 1938 – July 13, 2014
Arlene passed away at home after a lengthy illness, and with a broken heart after the tragic death of her much loved son Mark Anthony. Arlene, the beloved wife of Norberto, mother of Katherine (Clair) Weltzin, Robert and Dino (Michelle) Mariani. Beloved grandmother of Nikolas (Megan King), Stefan & Sandrine Weltzin. She is also survived by her sisters; Gloria Kraft (Helen) of Peachland, BC, Patricia Smith of Calgary, and her brother William (Brenda) Kraft of Saskatoon, SK, as well as numerous family & friends. Mom was born in Calgary at the General Hospital and grew up in Riverside before moving to Bowness, where as a teenager her first job was at a concession stand at Bowness Park. After she graduated from school, she took a job at Picardy’s at the lunch counter in downtown Calgary, and then in the Still Room at the Palliser Hotel. Here she met the love of her life, Dad. Just before they married in 1957, Mom was employed by Eaton’s as a waitress. In 1959 they moved their young family to the Crossroads Community where they forged many lifelong friendships as we kids were growing up. It was also around this time Dad & Mom stated their first restaurant at the New Noble Hotel (Hotel Arts), soon to be followed by restaurant #2, Bertino’s Steak House on 16th Avenue. For 26 years the staff and customers became a part of our family. Some of those friendships remain today. Mom was the ultimate people person, and she enjoyed working with the public. Mom loved to revel, taking her small family to Kelowna for summer vacations over an 18 year span, where she drove the family boat like she was at the Indy 500. During those great summers on the lake, she helped Dad teach all the kids at the resort how to water ski. Then there were her many trips to Las Vegas to see her favorite entertainer Wayne Newton and the many family trips to Europe. In 1976 Mom & Dad built their dream house in Bearspaw. Wherever it was, Mom always made it fun. She was a great competitor, whether it be driving, decorating her house, playing cards, bowling or being a prankster. She was a great hostess and it showed in the pride she had for her home & family.
Mom’s health declined faster after Mark’s death, and she was hospitalized often. Last year the family endured 2 trials that literally took the life out of her, and finally Mom could not bear the pain of losing one of her children anymore. Rest peacefully in God’s loving arms Mom, you are with your boy now.
A very special thank you to her friends Louise Bonamici, and Tracey Hill as well as the Mariani, King & Semenoff Families for the Love and Support given to Mom these past months while the family was away. Also to the Home Care Team that attended to her needs these past few years. You are all angels.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Luke’s Catholic Church, (1566 Northmount Drive, N.W. Calgary), on Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at 11:00 A.M.
