Loren Miller passed away peacefully on March 6, 2025 at Our Lady of the Rosary Hospital in Castor, Alberta, at the age of 82 years.
He was born July 17, 1942 at his parents’ home near Maxwell, Nebraska, to Blanche and Lloyd Miller, becoming the sixth child of seven. Loren grew up on the family ranch, raising and showing purebred Hereford cattle, even winning the Grand Champion Sale Bull at the Denver Stock Show.
On October 24, 1964, Loren married Mary Ellen Krause from North Platte, Nebraska. Their first two children, Mitch and Jill, were born in Nebraska where the family lived on a ranch.
The family moved to Canada into the Entwistle, Alberta area in 1972, to operate a 400-head cattle ranch for his uncle, Cal Miller. It was here the family welcomed their third child, Steven. Combining his love of horses and social interaction, he purchased land and started the Twistle Trail Ride business giving everyone the opportunity to enjoy horseback riding, campfire coffee, and homemade ice cream.
Loren continued ranching and raising cattle when the family moved to Coronation, Alberta in 1986. A few years later, they moved to a ranch near Cochrane, Alberta, eventually moving into town.
In 1994, Loren created his dream job, BBQs by ME, fueled by his passion for cooking and drawing people together.
When they retired, Loren and Mary Ellen traveled throughout Canada and the United States, spending winters in Mesa, Arizona, and returning to Alberta in the spring. In 2019, they settled in Castor, Alberta, enjoying senior-living spaces at the Prairie Manor and the Paintearth Lodge, later moving into long term care.
Loren served on boards of cattle and forage associations, enjoyed big game hunting, and pack trips in the mountains. His affinity for horses produced expert horsemanship.
Loren & Mary Ellen always had a circle of treasured friends. They all cared for each other by sharing good food, playing games, and praying together. Throughout his life, he was an active participant in their churches and communities, serving in various leadership roles, and championing social activities.
After nearly 60 years of marriage, Loren’s wife passed away in August 2024. Just six months later, Loren finished his earthly journey, joining his wife in Heaven, on March 6, 2025.
Loren is survived by his children Mitch (Angie) Miller of Omaha, Nebraska, Jill (Delvin) Bossert of Coronation, Alberta, and Steven Miller (Cindy Inness) of New Westminster, British Columbia; sister Vernita (Joe) Yanken of Dublin, Georgia; brothers Darold Miller, and Delmar (Hazel) Miller of North Platte, Nebraska; sisters-in-law Phyllis Wiebe of Winnipeg, Manitoba and Vonnie Childerston of Loveland, Colorado; grandchildren Matt Miller (Kathryn Masters), Shaun Miller, Markie Bossert (John Ens), Karly (Robert) Prindle, Teesha Bossert and daughter Haisley, and Zac Bossert; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 60 years, Mary Ellen; parents Lloyd and Blanche Miller; step-mothers Nira Miller and Martha Jane Miller; sisters Shirley Nuttal and Pauline Edson; brother Clinton Miller; parents-in-law Glenn and Matilda Krause; sisters-in-law Laverna Wescoat, Ilene Miller, Jane Miller; and brothers-in-law Dick Edson, Bill Nuttall, Howard Wescoat, and Ward Childerston
Loren strived to live his life for the Lord through meaningful personal connections. His willingness to engage with anyone affected many and, indeed, changed the trajectory of several lives.
