The Life of Larry Vernon Henry
On Wednesday, August 12, 2020, Larry Vernon Henry, a loving husband, and father of five, passed away peacefully at the age of 81, surrounded by his family.
Larry Vernon Henry was born on October 29, 1938, in Raymond, Alberta to Vernon and Ella (Court) Henry. As a small boy, he moved around a lot with his family until they settled in southern Alberta.
In grade twelve, Larry met Catherine Johnson and they became best friends and sweethearts. On August 28, 1958, they were married and started their life together in Calgary, Alberta. Larry worked at the Hudson Bay and Catherine was a teacher. Together they raised two sons (Michael and Cameron) and three daughters (Laura, Leslie, and Patti).
Larry worked his way up into management and the family moved throughout British Columbia and Alberta before settling back in Calgary, Alberta, where he worked at the Hudson Bay at Market Mall. When he retired at the age of 62, they moved to Cochrane, Alberta where they began to travel around the world. In 2004, they served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at the Manilla Temple in the Philippines for eighteen months.
Larry had a great passion for life. He enjoyed skiing, hiking, and backpacking. He was dedicated and faithful to the church where he served as a Branch President, Bishop and most importantly as a Sealer in the Temple. But what Larry treasured most was his family. He was a pillar for our great big family and enjoyed Sunday dinners even as the family grew to over thirty people. He felt blessed to live so close that he was able to be around his grandchildren. Whether it was listening to them sing in choirs or play in multiple school bands or playing sports like basketball, volleyball, rugby and wrestling. He was a devoted fan and a great cheerleader. He loved when his great grandchildren visited and yelled down “Poppa” from the top of their stairs.
He was a wonderful, generous man who was an amazing example of honesty, integrity, hard work, and commitment. He was known for his willingness to impart many life lessons, give strong hugs, and dish out no thank you helpings. He had a quick wit, infectious smile, and a kind and compassionate spirit.
We are sure that he is having a wonderful reunion with his Mom and Dad, siblings and friends that have gone before him and they have already put him to work in heaven!
He is survived by his loving wife Catherine Henry and his five children: Laura (Clarke) Bullock, Leslie (Jonathan) Crapo, Michael (Diane) Henry, Cameron Henry, Patti (Kris) Nielson.
He is also survived by his three younger siblings, seventeen grandchildren plus their eight spouses, and thirteen great-grandchildren.
