Mervyn peacefully left this world on April 25, 2012 in Calgary, Alberta surrounded by his loved ones after a courageous battle with cancer. Born April 12, 1938 in a farmhouse near Kinistino, Saskatchewan to a family of 13 children. He is survived by his loving wife Barbara, soul mates for 58 years and their children and grandchildren. Daughter Rhonda Murray (Keith), their 2 loving children Sean and Rachel of Oakville, Ontario. Son Rob Kurtz of High River, Alberta and daughter JoAnne Kurtz of Toronto, Ontario. He also leaves behind 11 brothers and sisters and their families. A teacher at heart Merv dedicated his life to public education most known for his work as Superintendant of schools throughout Alberta including High Prairie School Division, East Smokey School Division, and the County of Lacombe. In retirement Merv continued in leadership roles at the Canadian Rocky School Division and Westmount Charter School until the age of 70. Merv was a thoughtful and caring leader, husband, father, and grandfather. His warm smile and loving support will be missed by everyone he touched. A Celebration of Merv’s life will be held at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Cochrane, Alberta on Sunday, April 29, 2012 at 2:00pm . In lieu of flowers, if you wish donations may be made directly to either the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada or the Agape Hospice in Calgary, Alberta.
