Myrene Faye Kartik was born in Estevan, Saskatchewan on March 25, 1949 and passed peacefully to her rest on May 27, 2013 in Calgary, Alberta. She was the second daughter to Hillmen and Jean Holm, growing up in Saskatoon and later, Regina, Saskatchewan. She was a distinguished scholar in high school and upon graduation from Campbell Collegiate in 1967 went on to study at Andrews University in Michigan and earned a BA in Home Economics and a Masters in Religious Education. She also studied dietetics at Loma Linda University in California. Her work life included a variety of positions. She started as a teacher in Oxbow and Chaplin, Saskatchewan, moved on to be a chaplain’s assistant in Toronto, Ontario, then to dietitian in Winnipeg, Manitoba, after which she returned to teaching. She was a replacement teacher at Grandview Adventist Junior Academy in Hamilton, Ontario before becoming principal of multigrade schools in Simcoe, Ontario, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and Beisiker, Alberta.
Myrene taught at Chinook Winds Adventist Academy in Calgary until diagnosed with breast cancer. Following treatment and rehab, she returned to Chinook Winds due to her remarkable recovery, but when cancer returned a few years later, she continued her determined efforts to find ways to live fully with cancer. She was anointed at least five times in the last eleven years and each time regained her health. Her research and experimentation with alternative healing therapies augmented her cooperation and compliance with traditional medical treatment. She was always grateful for the many workers who assisted her life with cancer, although at times she had to be her own advocate to get the desired effect. She had great hope and trust in God through her whole journey with cancer. She loved to quote Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.”
Myrene was passionately devoted to her family. She met John Kartik at Branson Hospital where she worked as a chaplain’s assistant. They were married on October 10, 1976 in Regina, Saskatchewan and made their home in Winnipeg, Manitoba. They were an adventurous couple and moved a number of times, living in Warman, Saskatchewan; Oshawa, Ontario; Abbotsford, British Columbia; Hamilton, Ontario; Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; and Calgary, Alberta before making their home in Cochrane. They raised four children – Heidi (David) Hamstra, Janette(Jim) Turner, David (Melanie)Kartik, and Emily Kartik. Myrene and John blessed with nine grandchildren whom Myrene affectionately called “my darlings”; Abigail, Olivia, Elijah, Antonin, Levi, Malachi, Titus, Seth and Taleja.
Myrene’s house was always open to her children’s friends and her family members. She was well known for her open invitations to stay over and enjoy fresh baked buns and delicious, wholesome food. She loved to travel, and when her children spread out across the continent she continued to make regular visits no matter the distance. Even during her stay at Agape Hospice, she was still making plans to visit her children and grandchildren. When she couldn’t travel as much, she was delighted to have iPhone access to her family, complete with pictures and videos.
Myrene loved sand dunes, water slides, tobogganing, gardening, camping, hiking, the zoo, reading, sewing, quilting, and picnics. She was a compassionate teacher—conscientious in her work and helpful to many colleagues and students over the years. She had a big heart and showered love on her entire extended family as well: father, Hillmen Holm; sister, Marjorie (John) Wright; brother, Clifford (Mazel) Holm; five nieces and seven nephews; four great nieces and six great nephews. She was predeceased by her mother, Jean Holm, and brother, Howard Holm. Her friends and family will miss her ready smile and tenacious spirit. Myrene’s family eagerly anticipates the return of Jesus Christ when they will finally be reunited with her.
Visitation will be at Cochrane Country Funeral Home, 402 Railway Street West, on Sunday, June 2 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Funeral service will be Monday, June 3 at 11:00 a.m. at the Calgary Central Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1920 – 13th Avenue NW.
