April 28, 1931 – Clydebank, Scotland
January 5, 2020 – Cochrane, Alberta
It is with deep sadness that we announce that John (Jack)
Laird passed away on Sunday, January 5
th
, 2020 at the Bethany Care
Center at the age of 88 years. Jack is survived by his loving wife of 29 years,
Louise Laird.
Jack came to Canada from Scotland at the age of 26. Prior to
arriving in Canada, he spent a couple years with the Royal Air Force in Glasgow
where he began his career as an Electrician working on military aircraft. In the
later years of his career, as an Electrical Inspector, his work and expertise took
him on many journeys where he was often accompanied by Louise. After retiring,
his pleasure turned to camping and fishing and they enjoyed many summer months
at their site near Sundre. He enjoyed tinkering, building & doing repairs
around their home as well as at the campsite. Jack enjoyed music and singing
and often entertained his family and friends with songs memorized in his youth.
Although some could be considered inappropriate, he never failed to entertain
and bring laughter to those he shared his talent with. Many in Cochrane will
likely remember Jack from the Cochrane Legion, as he was a dedicated member and
enjoyed playing darts.
Besides his wife Louise, Jack is survived by siblings Robert
Laird (Aryana) of England, Sam Laird (Merit) of Norway, Morris Laird of
Carstairs, AB, and friend Margaret Hammitt, children John Laird (Lynda),
Stephen Laird, Jeff Laird (Ann), Heather Laird (Jon), Cameron Laird (Keri),
step-daughter Teresa Sylvestre (Tony) & step daughter-in-law Dawn Lewis
(Derek), Brother-in-laws Harvey Hogarth, Bob Hogarth (June) and John Hogarth, grandchildren
Laura Benoit, Kristin Benoit, Kali Laird, Aidan Laird, step-grandchildren Dylan
Cummings, Brendan Lewis, Danika Lewis and step great-granddaughter Willow
Labelle, and many nieces and nephews.
Jack was predeceased by his brother Jim Laird, Sister Molly
Elrick (Fred) and stepson Derek Lewis.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Robert
Mclaughlin for his dedicated support and the caring staff at the Bethany Care
Center.
At Jack’s request, no service will be held, but the family
invites you to join them at the Cochrane Legion on Saturday, January 18
th
@ 12:00 pm, to celebrate & remember him with a “toast”.
