Hugh John Hall

April 14, 1921 — October 17, 2012

April 14, 1921 – October 17, 2012

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, grandfather, and great grampa at the Brentwood Care Centre in Calgary, on Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at 91 years of age

.

John was predeceased by his wife Joan in 1999. He will be lovingly remembered by his children; Valerie [Rod] ,Bob [Dianne], and Chris [Brenda] as well as his grandchildren,

Cara, Janna, Matthew, Daniel, Jeffrey and four great grandchildren.

John was born in Hockley Woods, Essex, England. He served in the British Army in World War II enrolling as a private at the age of 17. He was captured at St. Valery France in 1940 and spent the duration of the war as a prisoner. He escaped through Poland near the end of the war.

He immigrated to Canada in 1948 and convinced Joan to follow him in his adventure. They married in Ontario in 1949.

John worked as the accounts manager and compliance officer for Bongard Leslie in Toronto, Calgary, and then in Montreal. He returned to Calgary and became a vice president of the Alberta Stock Exchange. He retired in 1990 and settled in the Okanagan with his beloved wife Joan.

He loved to sing. He was a member of The Stampede City Chorus for many years and enjoyed performing and travelling with the Barbershoppers.

Dad was an avid, if somewhat unaccomplished, golfer. He loved to play with his sons and grandsons. His golfing mantra was: ‘Hit and Hope’

Dad was an Englishman to the core, never losing his stiff upper lip and British accent, or his wry sense of humour. Dad loved a good party, and as there will be no formal funeral service, the family will be holding a celebration of John’s life in remembrance of him.

If friends so desire, donations can be made in John Hall’s name to Operation Eyesight Universal, 4 Parkdale Crescent N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 3T8, www.operationeyesight.com or a charity he greatly supported.

We would like to extend our deepest thanks to Hermine and Beatriz, Dad’s wonderful caregivers at Brentwood for their compassionate care of John until the end. To order memorial trees or send flowers to the family in memory of Hugh John Hall, please visit our flower store.
