November 10, 1936 – November 13, 2022
It is with sadness and much love that we mourn the passing of Jacqueline Margaret Flegel of Calgary, on November 13th, 2022, at South Health Campus Hospital, at the age of 86 years. Family was by her side.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children: Denita Bush, Jamie Wood (Steve), and Glenn Flegel; grandchildren: Joshua, Daniel, Brennan, Brady, Meghan, Riley, Kendall, Travis, Dean, Shea, and Breanne. Known as “Aunt Jackie” or “Aunt Jack”, she will also be fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Erwin Flegel; son, David Flegel; brother, Lynn Collins; and parents, Earl and Gladys Collins.
Jackie was born in Winnipeg, MB. During her high school years, she contracted polio. Despite being told she might not walk again, she defied the odds and not only walked again, but joined the Royal Canadian Navy, (WASS(X)6 H.M.C.S Chippawa and worked as a trainer for navy recruits. Other early occupational pursuits included being a key punch operator for IBM. After moving to Calgary and marrying Erwin in 1960, together they raised 4 children and co-owned a company called Jaywin Draperies, Ltd. One of her favorite jobs, however, came after “retirement” when she started working at Michaels craft store. Jackie was an avid crafter, which included sewing, knitting, cross-stitch, painting/drawing, jewelry-making, and everything in between! Her artistic abilities did not end there. Jackie was a talented piano player, and her music could be heard during the holidays and the occasional “jam session” with her husband and his family, in the earlier years. Jackie loved to travel and had many fun vacations with family and friends in Hawaii, Mexico, on European cruises, and made multiple trips to Texas to visit her daughter and family. In her later years, the things that gave Jackie the most joy were crossword puzzles, knitting, striking up conversations with perfect strangers, and having a good cup of tea! She so cherished her final years, living in her beautiful suite, overlooking the pond at Revera McKenzie Towne retirement community.
At Jackie’s request, no service will be held, but please share your memories of Jackie, with the family, here below.
The family wishes to send a special thank you to the staff on the Rapid Access Unit and Unit 66 in South Health Campus for their extraordinary care and compassion.
