January 3, 1929 – May 18, 2014
Roy was born in Bassano, Alberta on January 3, 1929 to Edward and Charlotte (nee Wurster) Downs. Roy came to Cochrane and began working in the hardware store which he later bought and ran with his wife Ruth from 1972 to 1989. Along with the hardware store, he spent much of his time as a member of many groups; he was a life member of the Cochrane Art Club, he worked as a volunteer fire fighter, was a scout master for the Cochrane Boy Scouts for 18 years, was a founding member of The Cochrane Lions Club and The Chamber of Commerce, was a director of The Southern Alberta Swim Association, and was a member of the School Board for a time. Along with his wife Ruth, Roy had three sons; Darryl (Tracey), Laurie, and Blake (Liz). Also they had many grand children; Alaina (Kurt), Curtis, Julia, Madison, and a great grandson Maksamillion.
He is also survived by his sister Marion (George), and his brother Albert (Agnes), and numerous nieces and nephews.
As per Roy’s request, cremation has taken place and there will be no formal funeral service.
