March 6, 1927 – January 21, 2015
Richard Dickson, loving husband of Grace (Degn), father of Rick (Deb Bridge) and Ron (Wendy Wisman), and grandfather of Michael and Thor (Sandra Morin), died peacefully surrounded by family at Chinook Hospice on January 21, 2015. Richard is also survived by his younger sister Jean Hesse, her three children and their spouses, and several great-nieces and nephews.
Born in Montreal on March 6, 1927, he grew up in Notre Dame de Gras with his father Percy and sister after losing his mother Gladys when he & Jean were children.
As a young man, he worked his way up to sergeant with the Duke of Yorks Royal 17th Hussars, where he became a tank commander.
On his first date with Grace in 1945, he wore his uniform to impress her and swept her off her feet; they married in October 1947.
He later worked for Bell Telephone and Lenkert Electric in Quebec and the Maritimes. In 1967, the family moved to Calgary, where “Dick” began working for AGT (now Telus), with whom he was employed until he retired in 1987.
After buying their first Irish setter in the late 1960s, Dick and Grace became heavily involved in breeding and showing Irish and English setters, many of whom became champions under the Westaway Kennel name (later Waywest). In addition, Dick served as president of the Tri Setter Club of Alberta for several years.
He was also a member of the Calgary Firefighters Museum Society. He had a lifelong interest in cars and enjoyed tinkering, especially with vintage vehicles. While with the museum, he restored the CP Ogden Yards fire truck, which can still be seen at the museum and which bears a plaque recognizing his contribution to the restoration.
Many thanks to everyone at Chinook Hospice.
A celebration of Richard’s life will be held on Saturday, January 31 at the family home from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Contact Rick at 403 286 4094 or Ron at 403 281 8631 for details.
