October 14th, 1931 – December 2, 2012
“Pastor Bill”, or “Cowboy Preacher Bill” as he was most commonly known, peacefully passed away on December 2, 2012 at the age of 81 years.
Bill was born in Grande Prairie, AB, on October 14th, 1931, the third of five children. He was pre-deceased by his father, John, and his mother, Pearl, his sister, Geneva Magee and a step grandson, Phillip.
He leaves to mourn his childhood sweetheart and wife, of over 59 years, Audrey (Stanchfield), their children Ken (Anna-Dawn) DeMaere of Cochrane; Cyndie (Alex Baum) of Calgary, Kevin (Rhonda) DeMaere of Calgary, and Cheryle (Kurt Ellis) of Edmonton. He also leaves 15 grandchildren: Amber DeMaere, Trevor DeMaere, Corry Baum (Emily), Kelly Baum (Tara), Ryan Baum (Carli), Nathan Zuccherato, Michael Traynor (Lisa), Michelle Knull (James) and Andrew Traynor (Brittany), as well as 6 great-grandchildren. Bill will also be greatly missed by his brother, Philip (Clarice), a brother-in-law Ralph Magee, sisters Ann (Brian Snow) and Mary DeMaere.
After attending Alberta Bible Institute he worked for Shell Oil. It was then, at the age of 23, Bill and Audrey felt called into full time gospel ministry. They pastored churches in Schuler, Regina, Carstairs, Kelowna, and Lloydminster; spending much of their near 50 years of ministry in Red Deer. Bill loved to compete in rodeos, team-pen, and hold weekly concerts at rodeos and churches across the country. He was involved in the founding of the Deer Meadows Camp and the Country Gospel Jamboree. He served as the first chaplain for the Red Deer Hospital, and helped establish the chaplaincy program. He served as a member of the Piper Creek Foundation as well other community programs. He loved to ride and train horses, and share his passion for horses with young and old. He loved to drive school bus, drive and plan trips for seniors, youth and children to camps and conventions. He loved his family, being with people, and a good cup of coffee; but most of all he loved the Lord Jesus Christ with all his heart.
In 2006 he was diagnosed with Parkinson Disease and Glaucoma, but remained a testimony of gentleness and faith until the Lord took him home. He Had Truly Come This Far By Faith.
