Gwynn graduated from High School at the age of 16 and then attended Saint Charles Commercial College in Amherst, Nova Scotia, graduating in 1950 at the age of 17.
She worked at Halifax Motors as an Executive Secretary, becoming a Charter Member of “The National Secretary’s Association” at this time. A few years later she settled in at Citadel Motors, a Cadillac Buick Pontiac Dealership, becoming secretary to the dealership’s founder in Halifax, Nova Scotia from 1959 to 1971.
During this time she met Peter Charles Bruner, a Royal Canadian Navy Aviator Chief Petty Officer, in the late fifties and married him on December 30, 1961. The marriage occurred at the Protestant Chapel at Shearwater Naval Air Station. They bought house by 1962.
Later on, July 30, 1964; Gwynn gave birth to her only child, a boy, Peter Eric.
By 1971 she left Citadel Motors and was the Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where she was the secretary to the Mother Superior for 2 years. After that she became secretary to the Chief of Police of Dartmouth (Roger Smith), Nova Scotia. While with the Police Department her and her son was in the receiving line with other officials and met with Queen Elizabeth during The Royal Visit in July 1976. She stayed with this position until August 1977 when her husband was officially transferred by the Canadian Armed Forces to Calgary, Alberta and moved the family with him.
She was a “Stay At Home Mum” for the better part of 5 yrs until 1982 when she started taking up “Temp” jobs with various companies in downtown Calgary. This continued for the most part until 1984 when she undertook a permanent position with MDM Medical Clinics as a “Doctors’ Scheduling Manager”. The company was renamed MCI Medical Clinics Inc. in the early 2000s and Gwynn stayed on.
It wasn’t until September 15, 2011 when she decided to part ways after completing 28 yrs of service.
Gwynn was born on February 8, 1933 in Oxford, Nova Scotia and passed away on Wednesday morning, February 12, 2014 at home in Calgary surrounded by her husband and only child.
She is lovingly remembered by her husband of 53 years, Peter and her son Peter Eric.
Gwynn is also survived by a Sister Betty Anne Brown of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, brother Dwayne (Delilah) Smith, Port Howe, Nova Scotia and many nephews and nieces.
Her Calgary Family; Loraine (John) Hepburn, Albert (Millicent) Silliker, Alberta (Dave) Shores, Madeleine (Jim) Ingram, Evelyn (Wayne) Dancey, Franklin (Linda) Silliker and many nieces and nephews as well.
A celebration of Gwynn’s Life will be held at The Royal Canadian Legion Branch No.285, 9202 Horton Road S.W., Calgary, Alberta on Friday, February 28, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Gwynn’s memory may be made to a charity of choice.
