Alice Rae (Nee Wenger) Hackman

August 10, 1937 — September 14, 2013

August 10, 1937 – September 14, 2013

With love and sadness we announce the peaceful passing, due to Parkinson disease complications, on September 14, 2013 with husband and daughter at her side. She will be lovingly remembered by her family including husband Lowell, daughter Corrine (Richard) and sons Kim (Kelly) and Quinton (Annie). Rae had six siblings including Carol, Donna, John, Rowland, Colin and was predeceased by her sister Gwen. Her grandchildren Courtney, Chelsea (Tyler), Lindsey, Ben, Marissa, Charles and Thomas and great grandchildren Ava and Ethan were an essential part of her life. They helped the sun break through the clouds of Parkinson’s. She always enjoyed spending time with and preparing meals for her large extended family and friends. There was always room at Rae’s table.

Rae was a registered nurse and combined career and family as a working mother. Her nursing experience led her to administrative positions in a nursing home and the Sisters of Providence retirement facility in Edmonton, a position she remembered fondly as highly rewarding.

Music was a great joy throughout her life. Rae and Lowell always enjoyed the fine arts together and sang with the Richard Eaton Singers in Edmonton. A highlight was a choir tour to the Netherlands. In Cochrane she continued to enjoy music in her church and family life.

Rae and Lowell were married for 54 years and retired in Cochrane where they enjoyed gardening, traveling and spending time entertaining family and friends. Another important part of her life was her volunteer work in the area of mental health.

Rae was diagnosed with Parkinson disease and battled it courageously. As a result, she became actively involved in the Parkinson society and the support group in Cochrane. She was also a willing participant in research projects and an active fundraiser for the Parkinson Alberta Society. Her involvement in the support group was an important part of her social circle as were the UBJ’s (unencumbered by jobs) of the Foothills Mennonite Church where both Rae and Lowell were active members.

A gathering of family and friends to celebrate Rae’s life will be held at Foothills Mennonite Church, 2115 Urbana Rd. N.W. Calgary, AB. on Friday, October 11th, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, memorial tributes in Rae’s memory may be made to Parkinson Alberta Society 102, 5636 Burbank Crescent S.E., Calgary, AB. T2H 1Z6 or Mennonite Central Committee Alberta (MCCA) #210, 2946 – 32 Street N.E., Calgary, AB. T1Y 6J7.
