DR. CHERNECKI, Gerald Michael

Dr. Chernecki photo4
March 4, 1962 – March 10, 2014

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Gerald M. Chernecki, beloved father, son and brother on March 10, 2014 at the age of 52 years following a long and painful battle with Major Depressive Disorder.
Gerald is survived by his precious daughter, Joella, by his parents Michael (Mickey) & Josephine Chernecki, his sisters Janice (Todd) Wilson and Jacqueline Onagi as well as his special nieces and nephews Blaine Wilson, Madison Onagi, Courtney Wilson and Cayden Onagi. Gerald had a special place in his heart for his nieces and nephews and would go out of his way to always make the kids feel important. When he spent time with them he could ‘let his hair down’ so to speak, get on the floor and assemble elaborate lego creations, build those forts in Pa and Grandma’s basement, carve a pumpkin, paint his face blue and transform himself into the ultimate hockey superfan. Each of the kids adored their Uncle Gerald and have beautiful memories of the times they shared together.
Gerald was born on March 4, 1962 in Dauphin, MB. He graduated from high school in 1980 and went on to the University of Manitoba, graduating with honors from the School of Dentistry in 1986. Gerald worked very hard his entire life and proudly built up his dental practise (Spring Hill Dental Centre) along with his dental school chum Dr. Morris Hucal over the past 25 years. He served on the Board of Directors, Calgary District Dental Society and was a highly skilled and respected professional. His patients often commented on his gentleness and his caring nature. He was the dentist that called his patients at home following difficult procedures, just to make sure they were doing alright. He took very little time off from work but when he did, he LOVED to golf. He was a member of Bearspaw, and would trim his workdays down to eight hours during golf season, enjoying countless days on the course with many dear friends. Trips to Phoenix, Las Vegas and South Carolina were frequent in recent years, just to get away for a couple of days and enjoy a few rounds on the links with his buddies or dental associates.
Gerald also kept in contact with his old high school buddies. Some of these friends moved to distant places in North America and beyond but they all put in efforts to stay in touch. In 2012, they all turned 50 and ventured off to Italy to celebrate how great they all looked with bald foreheads.
Gerald will be missed dearly by his family, his friends, his professional associates and all of his patients.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Bonaventure Roman Catholic Church (1600 Acadia Dr. S.E., Calgary) on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. Lunch Reception and Program to follow also at the church. Interment of Gerald’s Cremated Remains will take place at sunset (7:00 p.m.), at the Cochrane Cemetery.
The family wishes to acknowledge the efforts of Dr. Kent Sargeant for all the help he had provided to Gerald through the years.

Flowers are gratefully declined. In memory of Dr. Chernecki, memorial tributes may be made directly to Mental Health Day Treatment Services at the Rockyview General Hospital, c/o Calgary Health Trust,

Our family is so very sorry to hear of Dr. Chernecki’s passing. After loosing our previous dentist and looking for some time, we finally found a new excellent dentist, Dr. Chernecki. Our children were never afraid to go to see Dr. Chernecki and now our four grandchildren have felt comfortable and never afraid to go see him as well. He was always caring and concerned. After my husband’s chemo treatments he needed some dental work done and Dr. Chernecki phoned us at home in the evening to make sure everything was okay and even left his home number incase there was any problems. I don’t think we will ever find a dentist as caring and thoughtful as Dr. Cherneck. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time.

My heart broke when I heard the news of Gerald’s passing. He was not only a friend and my incredible dentist but a remarkable, loving man who made me feel special whenever I saw him. Many fond memories I have of Gerald….. from the first time I laid eyes on this handsome man at the age of 7 too him having to go buy a first time mom a terribly essential item for feeding my baby that I had forgotten at home. May god lead you home Gerald and you rest in peace and happiness until I see you again. Sincerest sympathies to Mickey & Josee and family.

Growing up it was Gerry (Chernecki), Gerald (Andries) and Gerard, so we would not get confused to who friends or the teachers were talking to. Gerry loved his sports – basketball, volleyball, hockey, and golf, among many more. He was an articulate and methodical thinker and student. He was a trusted friend and loyal team player through his whole life. We did a lot of homework in the Bear Pit at DRCXYZ, even if he had shifty eyes and was distracted by pleasant scenery walking in the halls (more of us got distracted as well). He was a quick learner and applied his wisdom, in school and when he started his dental career at St. Vital Mall. I referred people to him as soon as he began to practice because of his care, gentleness, and concern for others. It is A GREAT AND HUGE ACCOMPLISHMENT to be known as a consummate professional with his health challenges. Not only do you have to do the intricate tasks of dentistry, yet he had to overcome the challenge of his debilitating disorder too! (GOD gives us a new body and mind in Heaven for eternity.) He was gifted and was truly chosen by GOD to be an outstanding dentist. He will fill a cavity in Heaven, leaving a huge gap to be filled on earth. May Mickey, Josie, Janice, Jackie, and the entire Chernecki Family find peace and comfort knowing Dr. Gerald (Gerry) has now found the calm peace that his earthly life could not provide. He will always be treasured for who he was – an entertaining, caring, loving, super-intelligent son, brother, father, uncle, friend, professional, community builder, and business partner. His spirit, memories, character, and qualities are part of us always. May our love for Gerry heal our broken hearts. Gerry, you were, are, and will be one of the GOOD ONES. You were a gift to us! Until we meet in Heaven, my trusted friend.

We were deeply saddened at the news of Gerald’s death. We met him 24 years ago after our 5 year old daughter had been hurt by a dentist in Peace River. He introduced himself to her as “Gerald”, talked to her until she was comfortable, and we never looked back. We continued the 8 hour drive to see him for many years until finally moving back to Calgary, ironically as his neighbour. We will be forever grateful. His kind and gentle heart and hands will be greatly missed.

We were so very sad and heart broke when we heard the news of Gerald’s passing. He was not only a friend and golfing buddy but also an amazing dentist that had the gentlest touch. He needed to use his remarkable skill not once but twice to patch up my youngest son’s broken front two teeth. To our amazement, he was able to save his front teeth both times. We have also known Gerald since he started golfing at Bearspaw and will have many wonderful memories of the many social occasions over the years. Our most sincere sympathies are with his family. Rest in Peace dear friend. You will be dearly missed.

My kids loved seeing Dr. Chernecki. They thought it was cool that I had such a fun boss. He would sometimes give them coins to put in their piggy banks if they came by the office with me on a weekend, when he would see patients outside of clinic hours. He was also always very interested in how they were doing at hockey.

We miss G a lot. I feel very lucky to have been able to work alongside him for 13 years. Sending out big hugs to his family, friends and to our Spring Hill family. I know many of our patients really loved him too judging by all the goodies they would bring for him and how highly they spoke of him.

To root and grow such an wonderfully special and giving soul takes a veritable village of supportive and equally fabulous family and friends. Gerald spoke often and freely to the gifts in his life, although perhaps none more than his daughter Joella. It was my immense pleasure to have strolled quietly through that village with Gerald over the many years of our friendship. I feel as though I know you all in a very unique way! Have no fear, Gerald is sprinkling that infectious, magical dust that represents the kind and giving giant we have all come to celebrate in our lives, and now in a new village, others are feeling equally privileged to know our beautiful friend! Until we meet again dear, sweet Gerald! Yours Aye……Judy Duffett-Martin
