Roy was born in Bassano, Alberta on January 3, 1929 to Edward and Charlotte (nee Wurster) Downs. Roy came to Cochrane and began working in the hardware store which he later bought and ran with his wife Ruth from 1972 to 1989. Along with the hardware store, he spent much of his time as a member of many groups; he was a life member of the Cochrane Art Club, he worked as a volunteer fire fighter, was a scout master for the Cochrane Boy Scouts for 18 years, was a founding member of The Cochrane Lions Club and The Chamber of Commerce, was a director of The Southern Alberta Swim Association, and was a member of the School Board for a time. Along with his wife Ruth, Roy had three sons; Darryl (Tracey), Laurie, and Blake (Liz). Also they had many grand children; Alaina (Kurt), Curtis, Julia, Madison, and a great grandson Maksamillion.
He is also survived by his sister Marion (George), and his brother Albert (Agnes), and numerous nieces and nephews.
As per Roy’s request, cremation has taken place and there will be no formal funeral service.
The Downs family would like to extend thanks to Dr. Fundytus and his staff for the care and kindness given to Roy while in their care and, also to the facility and staff of The Bowcrest Care Center.

Dear Ruth, and family so sorry to hear about Roy it;s been along time since we seen you but often think of you when driving down main street looking up to see if you were looking out the window.Cochrane would not have many of the things people enjoy today. The joy of his paintings and the help he so willing giving of his time. The dedication to get The boy scouts off the ground for 18 years,The swim club,The school board and the volunteer fire fighters he was so much a part of the place he called home. The years of help in the hardware store if you didn;t have he would find it, always a family business and the welcoming feeling you got when you walked thru the door. How he enjoyed the gardening and keeping Jeans garden nice and tidy. May the many years you enjoyed when he was strong comfort you in the days ahead.

Dear Ruth, Darryl, Laurie and Blake and Families,

We remember Roy very fondly as a man of many talents and interests; he always shared his knowledge and was kind to one and all. The last few years must have been difficult for everyone but now he is at peace and there is some solace in that.
Our thoughts are with you and we will remember Roy as a father and grandfather, an avid gardener, a celebrated artist, a successful businessman and a leader in his community. He was a great guy.
