CALLAWAY, Violet “Dolly” June

June 15, 1926 – January 30, 2017

Violet “Dolly” June Callaway passed away peacefully at age 90 years at the Bethany Care Centre – Cochrane AB with her family by her side.

Dolly was the youngest of seven children born to Eliza Jane (Gamble) and William Fredrick Kent of Daysland AB. After completing school, she moved to Camrose and then to Calgary where she met the love of her life, Gordon Callaway. They were married on February 28, 1947 and settled onto Gordon’s family farm north of Cochrane where they developed and ran a successful dairy and beef herd until they retired and moved into Cochrane. Dolly loved preparing beautiful meals for her family, gardening and sharing her music. She and Gordon enjoyed traveling with their favorite destinations being Osoyoos BC and Hawaii. Dolly was an active community volunteer; as member of the community choir, supporting the Bearspaw 4H Dairy Club, and as a life-long member of St. Andrews United Church.  Dolly welcomed all into her home with a smile. Many came as strangers and left as life-long friends.

Dolly is survived by four children; Rochelle Callaway of Red Deer AB, David Callaway (Giesele) of Creston BC, Elizabeth Callaway of Cochrane AB, and William Callaway (Lorna) of Cochrane AB. She is also survived by twelve grandchildren and ten great grandchildren who were her greatest joy. Dolly was predeceased by her husband, Gordon, in 2012 and she was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Dolly’s family would like to thank Cochrane EMS, the staff at the Foothills Emergency department, Dr. Fundytus, Tammy Rogers NP and the Bethany Care Centre staff for their kindness, compassion and exemplary care.

A Memorial Service will be held at St. Andrews United Church, 128 1 St E, Cochrane AB on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at 11:00 am.

If friends so desire, memorial gifts may be made in Dolly’s name directly to St. Andrews United Church, 128 First St E., Cochrane AB, T4C 1Z3

I am so sorry to hear today of Dolly’s passing. She was an incredible woman – with so much courage. I am so glad my Mom and I got to know Dolly during their two stays together at Carewest facilities. They helped each other through the difficulties of the “aging” process. Dolly always tried to make the most of the situation, and was so kind to mom. I enjoyed our daily visits for those long stretches of time.
Dolly will be missed not only by the family but by those who’s lives she touched. Mom and I send our condolences at this difficult time.
