SMITH, Curtis Donald

April 30, 1987 – March 2, 2012

On March 2, after a struggle with depression, our dear son and brother chose to peacefully end his own life. He is lovingly remembered by parents Gerry and Janet, brothers Lucas, Cowan, and Brody & sisters Janelle, and Dariel.

Please join us for a celebration of his life at Cochrane Alliance Church, 902 Glenbow Drive, Cochrane on Thursday, March 8, 2012 at 4:00 P.M.

In lieu of flowers we encourage donations to charities advancing underprivileged societies or supporting mental health.

We wish to thank everyone who shared in Curtis’s life and want you to know that your support and love are helping us through this difficult time.

Curtis, thank you for the wonderful memories; we love you forever

    Gerry, Jan & family,

We are so sorry to hear of Curtis’ passing. I married into a family who experienced this heartbreaking loss, so I know this pain will never truly heal. I am so proud of you for acknowledging his decision. Too often this topic is brushed under the carpet, and depression needs to be acknowledged and discussed to be understood. If I can give you any advice, remember Curtis, talk about him, laugh about the great memories, keep his pictures up, and yes, cry, because his leaving is a huge loss, but his life deserves to be celebrated and remembered. I wish there had been some way of our family helping him to see passed his decision. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Janet, Gerry, Lucas, Cowan, Brody, Janelle, Dariel. You must have wonderful memories to cherish; I know we all do at MacEwan University. As a student leader at a Board of Governors workshop in Cochrane, I recall Curtis taking the time to take a very long walk down the highway just to visit his grandmother. While I knew Curtis as a very bright and engaging student, he was also a teammate in the MacEwan Dragon Boat team, row eight, side right. Power ten Curtis. Blessings to you and your family. Gerry, Janet, Lucas, Cowan, Janelle, Brody and Dariel. It is with profound sorrow I learned of Curtis’ death. He is one of those students a teacher will never forget. Curtis was a considerate, caring classmate who was admired by his peers. I know he was a beloved older brother and his love for his siblings was also evident! Having experienced this tragedy in my own family, I know how heart wrenching it is. Love to you all and love to a beautiful person. Such a loss to humanity!

    Dear Smith Family,

I rarely step off of the ice after a hockey game without having thought of Curtis. I grew up playing hockey with Curtis and he was the perfect balance for my reckless abandon in a defensive pairing. Without him there I find myself constantly thinking: “Play a little more like Curtis.” He is as smart, careful, and strong of a person as he is a hockey player. I wish I could be there with you today.

    Thinking of you all,
    Garret Dillabough

Remembering the good times may help you get through this difficult time. Our deepest condolences are with you now.

Gerry, Jan, Lucas, Cowan, Brody, Janelle and Dariel

We are all so very sorry to hear of the passing of Curtis. I didn’t know Curtis well like I did Brody, Janelle and Dariel. Having taught the three of them in elementary school I was always struck by the overall strength that each of them demonstrated every day. Not just in their solid academics and athleticism but in their core values such as decency, empathy, kindness and their incredible love for their family. These are qualities that all of the Smiths have. We pray that this strength will help all of you through such a difficult time.

We send you our heartfelt condolences.

    Warmest Regards,
    The Lantz Family

To all of you at this time of sorrow, you are all in our thoughts and prayers. I had not seen Curtis since he was small and it is so nice to read about all the lives he has touched with his presents. I cannot imagine what you must all be going through at this time. I hope you will know that he is at peace and that he is not being tormented any longer. His body may be gone but his spirit will live on and may you feel him near at those times of real sorrow. Our time on life is short but rest assured we will all be together one day in eternity. May you feel God’s arms around you and be comforted in His strength.

    Dear Smith Family,

Our deepest condolences to you on your great loss. It has been with great regret that we heard about Curtis’s passing during our weekly choir practice this past Wednesday at Mcgill Choral Society in Montreal, Words cannot express the feelings of all those who had the priviledge to know and sing with him. He was an extremely amicable fellow, polite, funny, helpful and always happy with a beautiful smile. We could have never imagined that deep inside he was hurting and suffering so much!
Our last goodbye to him and his Dad took place almost a year ago, the first night of the dress rehearsal, at the church where our spring concert was taking place in just a few days. Curtis and his Dad were passing through Montreal to pick up a few of his belongings and his piano, which was in our possesion. We chatted for a few minutes and we parted with a hug and his promise to return to Montreal…
May he rest in peace and may the whole family rejoice in the fact that their dear Curtis was very much loved and appreciated at McGill Choral Society. Out thoughts go out to you at this very difficult time.

“Death leaves a heartache that no one can heal, love leaves memories no one can steal.” It is good to know that death is not the end. The Creator, has promised that our precious dear ones will have the opportunity to live again, in paradise. Psalm 37:29 tells us: “The righteous themselves will possess the earth, and they will reside forever upon it.” So we look forward to seeing Curtis again in paradise. In the meantime we will draw close to our Creator and his son Jesus Christ in prayer, and the Bible promises that “he himself will sustain you.” – Psalm 55:22
