David Glenn Dawson

March 22, 1935 — June 26, 2016

March 22, 1935 – June 26, 2016

David Glenn Dawson of Cochrane, Alberta was welcomed into the kingdom of Heaven on June 26, 2016 at the age of 81 after suffering a stroke.

Born in Regina, Saskatchewan, Dave was an only child. In his youth, Dave was active in scouts, cubs, air cadets and church youth groups. Dave met Phyllis in College, and they married while Dave was finishing his Bachelor of Commerce degree at University.

Dave is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis, and their four daughters: Linda (Rob), Katherine (Brian), Nora (Phil), and Ardelle (Keith), five grandchildren: Scott (Candice), Jennifer (Chris), Jocelyn (Kristijan), Veronica and Taylor, and four great-grandchildren: Grace, Samuel, Caitlin and Sophia, as well as sisters in law; Louise, Doreen, Shirley and Pat and brothers in law; Victor and Ron.

Dave was actively involved with the church and was always the treasurer of churches he was a member of. After working for various government agencies and private corporations, Dave became the Director of Finance for the Western Canadian District of the Christian and Missionary Alliance. Even after retiring, Dave continued his volunteer work, serving on church and condo boards, travelling the province fundraising for Ambrose University College, spending many winter months volunteering his time for Wycliffe Bible Translators in Arizona, and leading bible study groups.

Dave’s fondest memories of his childhood were of travelling with his parents in Canada and the U.S. As a youth, his favourite vacations were when his parents rented a log cabin with a wood stove and he was able to explore the woods, push down dead trees, and catch frogs to fish for pike with. After raising his own family, Dave purchased a recreational property on the James River outside of Sundre, Alberta, which became a destination spot for the entire family. Many happy weekends and vacations were spent there as the entire family enjoyed year-round recreation, playing in the water in the summer and snowmobiling across the land and skating on the river in the winter. The family especially enjoyed gathering in the large cabin around the wood stove, or outdoors around the fire pit. Chopping firewood and having a blazing campfire, were among Dave’s favorite things to do. Wood smoke is a scent he always loved.

Dave and Phyllis took great pleasure in travelling and camping with family and friends, which they continued to do as recently as two weeks before Dave suffered his stroke.

Dave was a thoughtful and loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was always proud of each of his family members and their accomplishments great and small. He will be remembered by all, as the keeper of vast knowledge on a wide variety of subjects. He will be greatly missed by family that loved him dearly and friends that valued him for the good man that he was.

Thank you to all the friends and family that visited and prayed during Dave’s brief stay in Palliative Care at Foothills Hospital.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, June 29, 2016 at Cochrane Alliance Church (902 Glenbow Drive, Cochrane AB)
